Welcome to the Digital Generation

This video shows from a kids perspective why technology is so important to the, how they use it. and how it changes their view on school. This video and the others also in the module make me aware of how much kids use technology that isn't necessarily school related from texting, making videos on the weekends with their friends to their iPods. Why wouldn't we want to use more technology in the classroom? Do we really want to seem that boring to our students? I have already made a goal this year to incorporate more technology in my classroom. I have done just that and the students are so engaged. We will be finishing a video project before spring break. Stay tuned for blog posts with their videos!

  1. We do have to make things more fun and interesting for the students. I know how I am if something doesn't interest me. I find something else to do. And this is exactly what students do in the classroom. Good luck with the class project!

  2. This video reminds me of how much our students can do. As a mother and teacher I tend to forget that if my first grade daughter can do it, then so can my first grade students... and vice versa.

  3. I think saw myself teaching at the start of the video. That is really eye opening. Thanks for the video!

  4. This video is a good refresher of my attitude, just like the Pay Attention video and Did You Know? by Karl Fisch. It reminds me that I need to reach the kids through technology because their world revolves around it, and they love it, so I need to embrace it, too. I find that as I explore more and learn more about it, I feel like a teenager again and I begin to 'love' the technology again, too. I'm also getting excited because I know that the kids will be able to teach me more about it and I must be comfortable with that, I think it will create an amazing atmosphere in the classroom when they know that the teaching goes both ways. I'm excited to see what we come up with.

  5. Kids today are plugged into their ipods. If we can harness this tool we can reach them outside of the classroom. I am new to the idea of podcasts myself. Kids can do amazing things if we let them. Sometimes it is hard to try something new just like the first video we had to watch with the helpdesk for using a book. Sometimes we just need get out of comfort zone and dive right in and use the tools kids so effectively use.

  6. So often as teachers we think to ourselves, i taught it, why didn't my kids get it. Well if you are teaching it like the instructor did in the beginning of the video, the answer is clear, your students tuned you out. Students are coming to our classrooms with expectations of instant feedback, visual stimulation, and the need to enhance their create expressions. In the video, one girl stated that her ipod was her whole life. That shows the powerful connection she has to it. What if you could use that connection to teach your content. All to often our students come to our classroom viewing their personal technology as their lifelines, and we are cutting their lifelines off with mandates to leave that cell phone and ipod in your locker. Are we really doing what is best for kids?
